Keiki triathlon set for Pahoa

Keiki triathlon set for Pahoa

A keiki triathlon and family fun day will be held Jan. 21 in Pahoa.

Children ages 7-14 are invited to register from 7-8:30 a.m. at the Pahoa Pool entrance, with the event starting with swimming at 8:45 a.m., followed by bicycling and a run at the Pahoa Regional Recreation Facility.

Children must be accompanied by parent or guardian, and all participants must supply their own bicycle (tricycles and training wheels are acceptable), helmet, and covered shoes.

A safety briefing will be given to all participants before the first race, medals will be forwarded to the top three boys and top three girls for each age group.

Additional activities include music, entertainment, lots of community resources, food vendors and much more

Vulcans baseball clinic Jan. 21

The UH-Hilo baseball team will hold a baseball clinic Jan. 21 at Waiakea Uka Ballfield.

Registration starts at 8:30 a.m., and the clinic is free for ages 7-14.

Viking golf tourney Jan. 28

The Friends of Viking Golf will be having its 32nd annual golf tournament on Jan. 28 at Hilo municipal golf course. Entry fee is $180 per two-man team, which includes, team prizes, green fees, cart fees, lunch and tee prizes.

Early bird special of $160 per team for payment received by Jan. 12, 2017. Senior men’s 65 and over will be allowed play from gold tees. Entries are available at the Hilo municipal pro shop.

Haili girls tourney runs Feb. 20-25

The annual Haili girls volleyball tournament will be held Feb. 20-25 at Hilo Armory. Competition will be in the adult and junior divisions.

The 60th annual Haili Volleyball Tournament will be held at several sites in Hilo from March 27 to April 1. There will be open, A, B, Masters men and women as well as junior divisions. Applications may be downloaded from hailivolleyball.com.

Both tournaments have an entry free and the deadline is Feb. 6.

Bill Smith aced the the No. 5 hole last month at Banyans Golf Club, using a 9-iron.

Edward Fukuda witnessed Smith’s first-hole-in-one.

Setting the record straight

A soccer photo that ran in the Dec. 28 edition was of Hilo’s Lander Mizuba.

The caption misidentified the Vikings’ player.
